We love reading in all seasons, but winter always feels like the perfect time to relax with some books. I love that reading is an activity that both of my boys can easily engage in together as an infant and toddler. When we’re reading together, I try to make sure we’re reading a mix of books that they will both be interested in. At 2 and a half years, Asher is still interested enough in board books meant for infants. He loves to “read” them to Aiden from memorization. He is also starting to attend well to longer books and reason through different plot lines. At 10 months, Aiden loves interactive touch-and-feel books and books with flaps. I also try to have some fiction and some non-fiction books on our shelves when we’re focusing on specific themes. Here are a few of our favorite Montessori-friendly books we’re reading this winter:
one | Good Night Snow– We have many books in the “Good Night” series and love them all. Predictable patterns and informational!
two | Tracks in the Snow– This one reminds me of The Snowy Day. It has shorter sentences that would be great for older infants and toddlers.
three | Winter Bees– Fun winter poems!
four | The Mitten– A much-loved classic in our house.
five | Winter is Coming– Asher is loving this one this winter. A little longer, but a beautiful book about a young girl watching animals prepare for winter.
six | The Story of Snow– Great scientific explanations for the curious mind!
seven | Snow– Cynthia Rylant always has beautiful descriptions and the same holds true for this.
eight | Winter on the Farm– Such a fun intro to the “Little House” series for toddlers!
nine | Over and Under the Snow– A discovery of what happens not only on the surface, but also underneath the snow for various animals in the winter.
ten | All About Animals in Winter– Non-fiction with beautiful photographs
eleven | Animals in Winter– Explains how different animals hibernate or migrate when the cold winter weather comes.
twelve| Snow Day– Tells about everything that happens in a town after a big snowstorm. This is an older book, but Asher has been loving it because it explains the jobs the snowplows and tow trucks have.
thirteen | Lights of Winter– Describes various winter celebrations from around the world
fourteen | Winter Wonderland– Shares photos of the winter season
fifteen | Baby Loves Winter!– One of Aiden’s favorite series. The flaps are so interactive and fun for babies!
sixteen | Winter– We have quite a few of these Bright Baby touch and feel books. I love that they are tactile and expose babies to basic vocabulary.
seventeen | Hello Winter– A beautiful high-contrast book that would be perfect for even the newest babes!
eighteen | The Snowy Day– Another much-loved classic
Both of my boys have been enjoying these books this winter season, especially with the recent cold weather. What are some of the favorites in your winter book collection?

Great collection of book suggestions! I don’t get to Barnes & Noble enough so this was almost as good as being there and comparing the book myself! Thank you!

I know, me either! I do almost all of my book shopping through Amazon now, but I do miss going to an in-person bookstore sometimes!

YES to all of this! This winter my 2.5 yo and I have really established a morning routine of getting our respective morning beverages (milk + coffee) and sitting on the couch together under a blanket and reading a few books. I hope this tradition lasts beyond the wintertime, but I agree that it is the perfect time to snuggle up with your little ones and read!
KMenko says
I love this so much! One of my favorite things to do with my 2.5 yo too!
